Tension, compression, shearing, and bending all refer to types of mechanical forces that can act on materials, including biological tissues in the human body. In the context of massage and bodywork, these terms describe the various mechanical applications that influence how tissues respond to techniques used in treatment.

Understanding these mechanical applications is essential for therapists as it assists in evaluating how tissues react under different forces, ultimately affecting the outcomes of massage therapy. By applying tension, compression, or shearing, practitioners can help in promoting blood flow, reducing tension, and improving the overall functionality of the body's musculoskeletal system.

The other options represent concepts or techniques that are not directly related to the basic physical forces acting on the body. Reflexive effects relate to nervous system responses, reciprocal inhibition deals with muscle firing patterns, and isometric stretching involves holding a position without changing muscle length. These do not encapsulate the mechanical forces like tension, compression, shearing, and bending do.
